Eat to Feed!
28th of September was no doubt D-day for the hungry sweet-tooths of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas. To emphasize the plight of all hunger-stricken communities, the Model United Nations of TCSH hosted an ice cream eating competition to commemorate World Hunger Awareness Week.
From 12.30 to 2.30pm, hundreds of students thronged at the first floor of the college, wanting to get a bite of the action. For just RM10, participants get to eat as much ice cream as they can in 2 minutes. The charity event hits two birds with one stone: feeding hungry students, and donating to the World Hunger Relief 2010.
The competition kicked off with a blast. Competing rounds of 4 participants each took their positions at the tables, gearing up for the binge moment. Strategies included staring down the bowls of ice cream, popping and flexing their knuckles, and even smashing up the scoops of ice cream into paste. Then, on the count of three, the huge online stopwatch on a projected screen was started, and the excitement began!
Competitors grabbed their spoons and shoveled ice cream into their mouths at lightning speed, egged on by the enthusiastic crowd. Some even ditched the cumbersome spoon and opted to use their bare hands, much to the entertainment of their friends. Dozens of cell phones and cameras were whipped out as loved ones took the opportunity to record their friends getting down and messy with the ice cream. The supportive crowd even took turns to cheer on their favorite participant, each side competing to drown the other out.
Participants were just getting into the groove when their expressions suddenly changed. Looks of shock and cries of anguish echoed across the line of participants, with some stamping their feet in a bid to relieve the discomfort. Yup, you guessed it, brain freeze. Grimacing and dancing in their chairs, participants nevertheless stayed true to the spirit of competition. Striving to ignore the amused hoots and sounds of clicking cameras, they wolfed down bowl after bowl of strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla flavored ice cream, each bowl bringing them closer to the prize of a Thank God It’s Friday’s (TGIF) voucher worth RM 50.
The peak of the event was when the nearby administrative staff themselves were pulled into taking part. Mr. Hari, Ms. Sarah, Ms. D, Ms. Nirmala and Ms. Nini sat facing their bowls of ice cream nervously, about to have their social image changed. After the much anticipated countdown, the five picked up their spoons in a dignified manner and slowly ate bite after bite. Whoops, looks like they missed out the word ‘competition’ in ‘ice cream eating competition’. After an enjoyable 2 minutes of ice cream eating, the winner of the round was announced to be Mr. Hari, with a grand total of 3 scoops.
In the end though, as with all competitions, there can only be one winner. This year’s title of Fastest Ice cream Eater goes to the eating machine Kar Reid, from the IB Programme, with the winning total of 14 scoops! We sure hope he enjoys his Jack Daniels Steak in TGIFs! Now, when is the chocolate eating competition, hmm?
