Plushie Workshop: Organised by the Anime Club
"I am very impressed with how adept the students of TCSH are when it comes to making plushies". These words were spoken by the President of the TCSH Student Council, Leong Jian Wei during a recent plushie-making workshop organised by the college's very own Anime Club.
For two hours, the participants were hard at work cutting out plushie patterns, hand-sewing various pieces of coloured felt together, and shaping their plushies with cotton stuffing.
The workshop kicked off at 4.00 pm on the 13th of May at room eIII, but for Rachel Wong Rui Ching, Vice President of the Anime Club, preparations for the workshop were carried out several days prior. After being put in charge of conducting the entire workshop, Rachel had to teach herself how to sew her own plushies, as she did not have any past experience in making them. Judging by the finished product she displayed during the workshop, Rachel certainly has a knack for plushie-making, as the Onigiri (Japanese rice ball) plushie she had prepared drew many exclamations of “Oh my goodness, that is so cute!” from the participants (including the writer).
The atmosphere at the workshop was merry and cheerful, with pop songs blasting from a nearby laptop adding to the light ambiance of the event. Ever the attentive teacher, Rachel constantly moved from table to table, making sure that each participant properly followed the correct techniques and helping those who were having difficulties in following the steps. Throughout the duration of the workshop, the constant chatter of the participants was heard, which was also punctuated by the occasional bursts of laughter that followed whenever somebody made a sewing blunder.
However, it wasn’t just students who joined in on the fun, as the teacher advisor of the Anime Club, Ms. Charmaine Khoo Zhoong Lyn was also seen seated with the students, making her very own Onigiri plushie. This goes to show that it isn’t just the students of TCSH who are in touch with their creative side! Overall, the predominantly female participants who took part in this workshop seemed to immensely enjoy themselves. This writer would also like to add that the quality of each participants finished product was of surprisingly high quality. What made this even more amazing was that this was the first time most of the participants had even touched a sewing needle, let alone made an entire soft toy in less than two hours.
At the end of the day, the students who took part in this event certainly had plenty to smile about, as each of them went home admiring the result of his/her hard work and creativity.
