A Day In The Life Of A College Student: CAL CLIOD
On the 14th of June, Taylors College Sri Hartamas played host to over 50 Form 5 students from various secondary schools all over KL. Why were these kids eagerly gathered in the Alpha Theatre on that particular morning, you ask? Because they were participants of the College Life In One Day (CLIOD) programme for the Cambridge A-Levels course.
Basically, this programme gives its participants the privilege of experiencing the not-so-carefree life of a regular TCSH student for a day. This programme also gives these participants the opportunity to experience all the various facilities that Taylors College Sri Hartamas has to offer their students.
The programme commenced with an introductory speech by the CAL Programme Coordinator, Mr. Hariandra Muthu. The participants were clearly eager to listen to what Mr. Hari had to say about the CAL programme and about TCSH in general. An ice-breaking session with the TCSH Student Council followed. Student Council member, Nickolai Fernandez acted as the emcee for this portion of the programme and introduced the Student Council members. The participants were then given a rough idea as to the role of the Student Council in a slideshow featuring pictures of the various events hosted by them.
Next on the agenda were two ice-breaking games. The first required the participants to mingle amongst themselves to find certain people who fit a list of criteria given to them. Initially, the participants seemed reluctant to break out of their cliques to complete the task, but break out of their cliques they did. By the end of the game, the participants were unabashedly introducing themselves and making new acquaintances. The second game, 'Three facts and a lie', required the participants to be split into 5 groups. Each person would then have to state 4 facts about themselves, only one of which would be true. The participant who correctly guessed the most number of facts would win the game.
Following that, the participants were split into Science and Humanities groups for the A-levels subject demonstration. Science students had the amazing opportunity to take part in a Biology and Chemistry lab demonstration. The look of pure excitement on these students faces as they learned how to titrate acid and light up a Bunsen burner certainly would have lifted anybody's spirits.
The Humanities students, on the other hand, were given a choice of participating in either a session on Economics or English Literature. After that, lunch was provided for the students at the Ground Floor. Saving the best for last, the students then participated in an Explorace.
Upon settling down into their respective groups, the students were told that they had to find the Student Council members hidden at certain checkpoints throughout the college. The first group to successfully reach all the checkpoints would be the winner. The day concluded with a prize giving ceremony for the respective winners of the games. In an attempt to liven things up, the Student Council coerced the top 3 groups to dance to the oh-so infectious song, 'Nobody' by the Wondergirls. Needless to say, if their intentions were to painfully embarrass those 3 groups, they certainly succeeded with flying colours.
All in all, the participants of the CAL CLIOD had a very enjoyable day which they will surely remember for a very long time. We, at Taylors College Sri Hartamas certainly hope to see at least a few of these bright, young faces once again during next year's January intake.
