Done With College: Graduation Ball June 2010

Done with College, throw a party and then bring on university. The 2009 January intake went out with a BANG and came dressed to the nines for their last night of chaperoned partying. Yeah, you heard right, the Spring Equinox was the event to be at this June.

I don’t doubt for a minute that the pagans who celebrated this seasonal event came anywhere near to topping the craziness that went down at this event. It had everything from farewell speeches, jokes, dances and even a band from Malacca.

Apart from starting a tad bit late, as is common with any Malaysian event, the organising committee pulled out all the stops to try and make the event a success. This involved setting out romantically set tables to entice the guests into a romantic summer mood, ‘Olalla’, opening the event with sultry summer tango and giving the venue a much needed splash of colour by decorating it with flowers of all sorts. Marcia, the driving force behind the Grad Ball, warmly acknowledged the role her committee played and the “sweat and blood” they had put in to make this event happen. Job well done, guys.

Opening the event with sultry summer tango

Well, the event started at 7.00 p.m., that’s when those big wooden “what’s behind those doors” opened to reveal a dimly lit hall with flower labelled tables and coloured lights. Most of the people in attendance were the January 2009 CAL intake, as it should be since they were the ones who were graduating. It was to these students that both Mr. Rahul and Mr. Ananda dedicated their heartfelt speeches to. Despite having to make his speech “off the cuffs” as he termed it, Mr. Ananda managed to find the words to describe this batch of students that he has gotten to know over the last year and a half. Proudly, he stated that “even if your results don’t come out the way you hoped know that you will be successful, because you have managed to pick up other very important qualities along the way”.

Now, since it’s their graduation it seems only right that we hear what the students who are leaving have to say, right? They had a lot to say. I asked around to see if any of them felt sad about leaving, contrary to what you may think they were all too ready to leave us unhappy campers behind. They admitted that though they were obviously upset to leave their friends they were ready to move to university. They were excited, albeit nervous, but had few qualms about staying in touch, reminding me that they have an array of options available to them like Skype, Twitter, Facebook and the good ol’ telephone.

When I asked if they had some parting sentiments to share with their friends here is what I got, so friends if you are out their reading this, this what they had to say: “Waddap biznitch”, “If you're having fun doing what you're doing, you've already succeeded” and “we only part to meet again”.

You’re probably wondering about the entertainment of the night, right? Well, even if you aren’t I’m still going to tell you, because this is definitely worth hearing. There were a couple of great acts on: three bands, a fierce catwalk, a dance off and a dance floor. The band from Malacca did a memorable rendition of Taylor’s Swift’s song “Love Story” , K.I.T.A did the all time classic by The Cranberries, “Linger”, while Sarah and Tim performed a more sombre song, “You Found Me”, by The Fray.

“Bootylicious” is the only way to describe the performance by Alex Tay – a little dance off between three guys meant to encourage the audience to pick a winner for the Best Dressed Male Category. The other two guys didn’t know what hit them when Alex took to centre stage and some fierce booty shaking ensued. It was all too obvious who won that round, congrats Alex! The Best Dressed Female category was a little tamer, with Janice Siew emerging as the winner in her blue maxi dress.

The best dressed of the night

The other two awards presented that night were the Mr. and Ms. TCSH All Rounder awarded to the male and female student who stood out amongst their peers when it came to both academics and extracurricular activities. Voting was carried out at the beginning of the night and results released later. For the Male Category, Choon Lim was the favourite to win. Even his contenders thought so, including Victor, who was also in the running, voting for Choon Lim. The female category was less clear, however at the end of the night Marcia Lee emerged as the winner.

The night came to a close on the dance floor, which almost everyone took part in, teachers included. The dance crew that performed a dizzying hip hop number earlier in the night cheered the students on in their last night as TCSH students.
