Taylor's Open and Campus Days 2009

The Open & Campus Days were held to promote the pre-university courses at Taylor’s as well as to provide an opportunity to prospective students in obtaining a clearer picture of their next step towards quality higher education and their future career.

On the 11th – 13th & 18th – 20th December 2009, Taylor’s held its 2009’s Open and Campus Day respectively at all of its higher education campuses at Subang Jaya, Sri Hartamas & the most anticipated Lakeside Campus.

In preparation for those days, various locations of the college were decorated and rearranged for the showcase of TCSH & pre-university courses. Some of the locations on showcase were:

@ Beta Theater – Student Events & Extra Curricular Activities of 2009
@ Library – Demonstration of Taylor’s e-brary system
@ Classroom e1, e3, e12 – CAL, SAM & ICPU showcase
@ Discovery Lab 1, 2, 3 – Physics, Chemistry & Biology showcase
@ Delta Theater & Classroom 2.14 – IBDP showcase
@ Gen-Y Computer Lab – Student Portal Demonstration
@ ECA Area – Fun games and challenges

In addition, almost all of the members of staff, including the lecturers and non-academic staff were on standby to assist with enquiries and education counseling. For the purpose of differentiating staff with the members of the public, staff were dressed in a red Taylor’s Pre-U Polo shirt.

Due to the huge turnout of enquiries on all 6 days, there were also more than 20 student ambassadors on standby, who helped out with various tasks such as registrations and reception. Prospective students and their parents also were also given the opportunity to take a Campus Tour of the ultramodern Sri Hartamas campus. The student ambassadors played a vital role in the Campus Tours and certainly made a good impression when they shared their study experience at Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas.

On Campus Days, 18th – 20th December, TCSH held various talks on the various Pre-University courses offered by Taylor’s. Mr Anandakumaresh, the campus director of TCSH was the main speaker. He gave a detailed explanation with regards to the structure, duration, track record and pros & cons on each of the Pre-University courses offered by TCSH; the Cambridge A-Levels, South Australian Matriculation and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. On the 19th particularly, university representatives from UK through MABECS, USA through MACEE and Australia paid a visit to give talks on overseas tertiary education and placements.

As most of the prospective students were high school graduates and had only recently completed their SPM, we on behalf of the Editorial Board sincerely hope that they have a clearer idea on their next step towards quality education.

Lakeside Campus Open Day

On 11th Dec 09 (Friday), Taylor’s has made another mark in the education industry with its opening of the Lakeside Campus. It is it’s first out of the three open days from the 11th to the 13th of December ‘09. Situated in Subang Jaya, one can expect an expanse of open-air compounds, and high ceilings that give the new establishment the grandness that Taylorians boast of and that visitors are impressed by.

Taylor’s of course known for it’s strive for distinction by the excellent performances of its students, has yet again enhanced its reputation as the great institute it is, with it’s new campus with hopes of making Taylor’s a university of 20,000 students. It is a very large move for Taylor’s for investing in such a development catering to tertiary education, and Chief Operating Officer of Taylor’s, Mr. Thou Kok Cheng responds to this, saying, ‘It gives parents and students a clear idea how committed Taylor’s is in terms of providing a good education system and not looking only at the curriculum, but looking at the physical set-up as well… It has created a new benchmark for other people to follow.’

I have been given the opportunity to promote the IBDP course on the Lakeside Campus’s first ever open day. On the day, me and three other students from their respective pre-U courses had the pleasure of sharing our experiences as a Pre-U student of Taylor’s after a talk given by the President of Taylor’s College, Mr. Lim Tou Boon, in which he refers to as ‘a part of history’, for it was the first talk ever to be given in the Lakeside Campus. The talk on existing pre-U programs in Taylor’s Mr. Lim gave was in one out of the many nicely furnished, well designed lecture theatres of the campus. The turn-up of people during the important occasion was a little bit daunting, especially when I had to give my speech to a very large crowd. The open day has attracted an impressive 2000 walk-ins, indicating the interest of the public.

The new campus had the lines of trees and the green environment that the pictures on the brochures of the campus have promised. And of course, what would the lakeside campus be without its lake? There were no disappointments to how sizeable the lake was, comparing to the pictures of the lake in the brochures. The entire campus ground was alive with the blaring music and all the visitors and Taylorians with their booths and tents of the different clubs and societies that the students initiated, such as the Anime Club, giving passers-by a taste of the fun Taylorians have from their extra-curricular activities. And also the Taylor’s hospitality students cooked up some little delights to share with the visitors.

The bustle went on the same indoors as well as outdoors, when the Hartamas Campus student representatives first entered the lakeside campus we were led to the multi-purpose hall that had the height that could very well be almost four stories tall. The sides of the hall was lined with booths on the various programs and courses that Taylor’s offers ready to inform and guide querying parents and students, to consult them on their academic paths. The hall was packed the whole day through.

Taking a tour around the campus, you’ll notice though in such big and wide place and many different routes to take to get to where you want to go in the campus, it’s very easy to identify where you’ve been and not get lost. Many classrooms were used as showcase rooms and were occupied by student representatives stationed at their posts enlightening questioning visitors. I myself being one of the student representatives was glad by the numerous visitors who were so open to what Taylor’s has in store.

With 2010 being labeled the year of digital distraction, Taylor’s Lakeside Campus has readied itself to embrace the ongoing technological developments and has jumped in the wagon of making it’s environment a tech-user-friendly learning environment as well.

Associate director of TCSH, Mr Frank Meagher, was also present to promote the IB programme. Mr. Frank spared time to share his take on the progress of the promotion of pre-U programs at the multi-purpose hall of the lakeside campus, saying,

I think the overall response to today was good. I think there’re needs to be further awareness of IB. Currently, there’s a large awareness for CAL, SAM and ICPU, but I think as a result of presentations by Mr. Lim the awareness will increase. And I look forward to tomorrow, when everybody is free to come and there’s a large numbers and increased enquiries tomorrow as well as Sunday. I’m pleased with today and I’ve talked to many parents, and I hope to do the same for the next few days and that will impact the (IB) enrolment for July”.

Currently, Taylor’s University College houses all existing tertiary programmes, currently located at Taylor's various campuses in Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya. And the lucky Taylorians with the privilege of studying at the campus can look out for the restaurants primarily made for the Hospitality and Tourism faculty. Though parts of the campus is still under construction and only to be ready by 2012, Taylor’s has opened so many doors to the public to the bright futures that we, students, all hope to achieve.
