Facebook

Facebook. Just the mere mention of it transmits tacit acknowledgement amongst teens around the globe. Scratch that. People around the globe. However, it’s really the teens who take pleasure in it.

What do you do when you possess an iPhone and it gets dull during classes? Facebook. What do you do the second you arrive home and turn on your computer? Facebook. What do you do when night falls? Facebook. Facebook. Facebook. Without a doubt, Facebook is constantly on our brains. Or rather, it has irrefutably become a routine for teens every day around the globe. If you are someone who can last without Facebook for weeks, then kudos to you.

It’s not as though there’s an abundance to do on Facebook. Sure, it’s a great mean of communication with your peers and for keeping up to date with activities, but after all that is done with, Facebook just becomes a droning bore that teens would linger on and stare at, a vast white networking screen – a blank canvas. Most teens do this in hopes of something alluring popping out, which takes away countless of hours from their day. The numerous notifications that appear are even more exciting to teens than watching television these days. Relatable, no?

On a brighter note, it can indeed be deemed wonderful how Facebook is always there for us, providing us with much to indulge in. Which we do naturally of course, delve ourselves in. On the other hand, we end up regretting afterwards as the realization hits us of how the endless hours spent hopping around Facebook, could be spent on much more productive things. After being cooped up in front of the computer clicking away on profiles and tagged photos for hours, we realize how much time we’ve sacrificed for Facebook. But then again, could you imagine a world without Facebook? Without Mark Zuckerberg’s brilliant creation? Simply unimaginable!

Also not forgetting that Facebook can also be termed as a murderer, yes MURDERER! Several cases on Facebook have occurred whereby teens post about the stress or troubles they’ve been struggling with, and when nasty heart-retching comments are posted in return, the devastation in their hearts cause them to take their own lives. Not only is it tragic, but also unnecessary as all this could have been avoided. These cases also take form in many other stories on Facebook, all of which are true.

On the bright side, Facebook is not only addictive for all the wrong reasons. It’s also has the right ingredients that keep the teens going. Being able to track down long lost friends, friends who are living overseas and communicating more efficiently with peers has proved as a great plus in Facebook. There is no right or wrong way as to what teens should do with Facebook or how they should utilize it. However, it is beneficial to ponder upon it every once in awhile. As every individual has their respective enlightening opinions about it,

I’m sure they’ll do what’s most relevant to them in the end. And that is in fact, the beauty of Facebook.

If you weren’t already aware of this, the infamous anonymous group who hacked many countries’ government websites has vowed to destroy Facebook on the 5th of November this very year. In a video, the group had recently declared a war against the social networking platform for abusing people’s privacy and allowing governments to spy on its users. It is a big question on whether Anonymous will be able to take down such a massive website. But if they could take down our Malaysian’s government website, why not Facebook? Facebook has yet to respond to the threat. How would you feel if your beloved medium of communication was destroyed? Gone. Non-existent. Certainly it would affect many greatly, some more than the rest. Some not at all.

The total number of Facebook users has been growing everywhere and substantially increasing by the day. As of March 2010 last year, the top 10 countries with the highest number of Facebook users have been confirmed as USA, UK, Indonesia, Turkey, France, Italy, Canada, Philippines, Spain, and lastly, Mexico. The highest ranked country has up to 114 million users and the final ranked country in the 10 has up to 9 million users. Astonishingly, Malaysia is ranked in the 19th spot, which is relatively high comparatively with the number of countries there are in the world. Excluding China of course, which has banned Facebook on the internet. Also, would it surprise you that the majority of people on Facebook from Malaysia are males? We have a total of 5 million Facebook users in our country, which is not too shabby. Imagine – these figures are increasing by the thousands each day!

As the Facebook motto goes, “With power comes great responsibility!”, and the power is indeed in our hands.
