ECA Drive Day

As students rode the escalator up to the top floor of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas on the 29th of July 2011, they were greeted by members of various clubs and societies seizing them up like they were the last few pieces of meat at a market. Well, that may be an overstatement, but to say otherwise would be a euphemism as well. The cheeky yet cut-throat level of competition which hung thickly in the air was a tacit acknowledgement by the members of the clubs and societies trying their best to recruit new members. For the second time of the year, on the 29th of July 2011, Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas held its ECA Drive Day in conjunction with a blood donation drive and SAM Carnival.

Before the ECA Drive started at 12:30pm, members of various clubs and societies were already dressed to the nines in relation to the activities of the respective clubs. De Fashionista club had tall girls dressed in black with stiletto heels to boot as they walked around promoting their club. On the other hand, Dance Club had their dancers in their dance attire; girls sporting off-shoulder tops whilst the guys were spotted in flashy shoes. Members of various clubs and societies were walking around the top floor shouting at the top of their lungs to promote their respective clubs. At a certain point, the members were trying to shout louder than each other, which led to a mutual break of laughter after getting a few stares from the other students. Due to the fact that many students had an overlap of their memberships of different clubs and societies, the atmosphere of ECA Drive was frenetic as members raced to promote the different clubs they were part of. For example, Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas Editorial Board 2011’s very own Victor Tan who was sharply dressed in a suit, was seen vacillating between promoting Editorial Board and promoting TCSHMUN.

Students of the new intake were swarming around, mostly in groups of three or four, as they made their way through the hallway in search of clubs and societies that appealed to their interests. While the ECA Drive was going on, there were music and dance performances by the students of TCSH to spike up the already frenetic atmosphere. Sign-up sheets were seen placed on the desks of all the clubs and societies, with pens readily available, in hope for a strong and steady recruitment. Laptops with flashing images, music blaring through speakers, and festoons of decorations were all a common sight on the top floor. Colourful flyers were also passed out to students in hopes of attracting them to the booths of respective clubs and societies. Huge manila cards and Styrofoam signs tied with balloons were also a few attractions that clubs and societies made to reel students into visiting their booths. TCSH Editorial Board’s own photographers were also seen snapping up photos here and there, with many students more than willing to be included in the photographs. It was evident that almost all the students were having fun at the ECA Drive.

In conjunction with ECA Drive Day, TCSH also held its blood donation drive in the Delta Theatre where the students and staff of TCSH were encouraged to donate their blood for a good cause. Students were seen hesitating whether to enter the chilly room, but ultimately persuaded into donating their blood for a good cause. TCSH’s “hot psychology teacher”, Miss Chuah Li-Sze was seen entering the Delta Theatre looking scared, yet later looking happy as she left. She later posted on Facebook saying, “I donated blood today! And it came out really, really fast!”

Due to the fact that the SAM Carnival was also held on the same floor and at the time the ECA Drive was being held, the crowd started to dwindle in numbers around 3pm. Nonetheless, students from the new intakes who had just finished their classes began to fill the top floor once again, and the members of the various clubs and societies felt relieved.

All in all, the ECA Drive Day reached its main objective – to recruit new members into the various clubs and societies of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas. When it ended at 6:30pm, members of the clubs and societies were seen counting up the number of names on their sign-up sheets with smiles on their faces as they cleaned up their respective booths. The recruitment process of ECA Drive Day was irrefutably exciting for both the members of the clubs and societies as well as the students of the new intake. The ECA Drive Day once again denoted yet another successful event carried out by the students of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas.
