Fashion, Food, Fun with The De Fashionista Fair at TCSH

The ground floor of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas was abuzz with noise, the smell of doughnuts and the sight of brightly coloured satin and cotton on Friday, April 22, 2011. The De Fashionista Fair, the hottest topic of conversation amongst many students within Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas during the previous week, was in full swing.

From 12.30 pm to 6.00 pm, TCSH was brought to life by the pulsating beats of fashion runway music; a unique décor of bright pink and purple stars; and the cheerful, friendly chatter of students who were able to go shopping within the campus. Bringing in local blog stores such as Fluorescent Adolescence, My Vanity Closet, Penny’s Online Store, Luv Clothes and My Picky Closet, the President of the De Fashionista Club, Tan Yee Ying and the Vice Presidents, Jia Ren and Amreth, worked hard with their team to produce this fabulous event, in collaboration with the Film Club and Music Club of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas.

The main events in this Fashion Fair were the screening of the Film Club’s selection, Life as We Know It, which came with one free slice of pizza as well as a drink, and of course the shopping extravaganza provided by the online blog stores. Various items ranging from cute pink miniskirts to printed summer bags were on sale, and the clothes sold were well-priced, many items selling at below RM50. The author also noticed that there were many deals available, as many items were priced as low as RM10. The clothes displayed reflected the latest fashion trends amongst Malaysian youth, such as cropped jackets and fitted dresses ranging from dark colours to subdued pastels.

It was a visual treat for those who had brought enough money for the clothes but those who had not were still treated to a sale. There were various food booths set up at the De Fashionista Fair, selling many different foods, including J.CO doughnuts, cotton candy, and ice cream. There was even a wonderful stall selling chocolate fondue that also sold strawberries and marshmallows. All foods were all priced less than RM5 and thus relatively inexpensive, so no one was left out in the enjoyment.

Other events included the sought after title of “Best Dressed” which was given through the Best Dressed Competition. All the participants had dressed well but when it came to deliberation and voting by the crowd, only two could be chosen for the male and female category. The winner for the Female Best Dressed Title was Carmen, who wore a cute ensemble, while the winner for the Male Best Dressed Title was Daniel Fong, a lady killer in his white blazer and casual jeans. They won prizes of up to RM500 in merchandise sponsored by Seventeen Magazine.

Speaking of Seventeen Magazine, they showed up in their own booth along with Female Magazine who formed a very strong fashion advice and consultation team. Seventeen and Female Magazine gave out free issues of their publication as well as looked for Seventeen’s next cover girl or casting girls. This writer tried out and they were friendly as well as encouraging to many girls to try out for the magazine’s modelling cast, further showing that we are all beautiful and anyone can make it in a magazine, especially with Seventeen’s encouraging support.

The penultimate event was a Fashion Show, from 4.30 pm to 5.00 pm, in which clothes from the various blog stores present at the event were modelled by the beautiful ladies of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas. The girls, all decked out in the trendiest clothes and heels of contemporary fashion, walked the ground floor like professionals. Extravagant and fabulous are the proper words to describe the event. The girls came down the escalators while the music blared their runway beat. They walked confidently and with attitude, showing that anyone can be a model as long as they have confidence, as confidence inspires beauty.

There were then performances from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm by the Music Club – mainly acoustic guitar renditions of songs like Starlight by Muse and Kelsey by Metro Station. The stand out performance, to this writer, was Lim Kee En’s excellent unrehearsed solo performance which provided a good ending to the event.

The De Fashionista Club has decided to donate a portion of the funds received from the execution of this event to the Japanese earthquake relief effort, in which TCSH has been actively involved over the past two months. The funds will be used to help ameliorate the plight of the Japanese people, and allow them to recover from their present setbacks. The rest of the funds will go to the club funds of the De Fashionista Club in order to make sure that Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas will see far more fabulous fashion fairs and fashion fiestas in the months to come.
