TAYTECH visits MMU

On the 21st of February 2009, the Technology Club of Taylors College Sri Hartamas (TAYTECH) made a visit to the Multimedia University (MMU) in conjunction with their Engineering Week.

We arrived at Multimedia University at 10.30am, in time for the opening ceremony. Eventually, we registered and were seated for the opening ceremony. There were speeches by the Dean of the Science Faculty of MMU, and the Vice-President of Multimedia University. We then witnessed the rocket launching session to start off the day. It was truly an amazing experience as we got to see firsthand how it was done. Though the first launch was a failure due to mechanical difficulties, the second launch went perfectly well. The rocket flew to a great height and landed beyond the gardens.

Next on the agenda, lunch! We hungry college students decided to head out to a nearby restaurant to fill our stomachs. We headed back to the MMU campus at around 1pm. The first event we went to was to the ‘DOME’. It is a space simulation area where one gets to experience outer space. The whole experience was breathtaking as we all felt like we were actually in outer space! Besides that we also learned about various horoscopes and their places in the sky, the interior design of the spaceship and space center. We were also giving vital information about the conditions in space. For example, did you know you can exercise extremely fast in space because you cannot feel your muscles in space? And did you know your face actually swells up in space, making you look fatter? We bet you didn't.

The TAYTECH members were then allowed to explore the whole place. Among the exhibitions in place was an interesting gadgets display by Motorola. These 21st century gadgets were actually used by the government at one point but now they are available to the public too.

After all that, there was one last event for us, the ‘Build Your Own Telescope’ workshop. We were given two tissue boxes, a scissors, tape and a glass. As we were a big contingent, we split up into two groups. Believe it or not, we got into competitive mood and both groups were determined to outshine the other.

We had a great day at MMU. We gained lots of knowledge and experience. It really was an enjoyable experience for our very first activity and I dare say we can call it an overwhelming success. We hope this is the start of many more future successes.
