Valentine's

This Friday 13th, bad luck was the last thing on anybody’s mind at Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas (TCSH). Who did we have to thank for that? The Student Council of course!

In conjunction with Valentine’s Day which fell on the 14th the next day, the Council sold large red China roses, Hershey’s kisses chocolates, and adorable teddy bears and other little animals that were no bigger than your thumb (conveniently they were made to hang on one’s mobile phone).

Each of these items sold individually at various prices, but packages comprising of either two or three roses and miniature animals or chocolates were on sale as well. The Student Council even allowed free dedications to be made to people by those who wanted to give their loved ones something special this Valentine’s. On the 13th of February, it was a job made easy for the rest of us and a job well done by the Council as our very own Cupids hurried around campus delivering valentines to pleasantly surprised and lucky students. Some students even presented their teachers with valentines.

The purpose of selling these things was to raise funds for the Student Council, since the current committee are fresh from the recent elections in January. The student council are taking over from the previous committee that was the pioneer group of TCSH. Since there was a smaller group of students to cater to then, a greater amount of funds are needed now to meet the needs of the current college students. In short, this student council is starting (nearly) from scratch.

The sales from Valentine’s have proved satisfactory, and the Student Council members are pleased with their efforts. It is, after all, for the benefit of the TCSH students. “Our profits are your profits,” said a committee member. Despite the probability of success, the Council took no risks and made efforts to ensure that the student population of Taylor’s was well aware of the sales. With the help of some willing student volunteers, the Student Council came up with an advertisement: a short and humorous video clip promoting their roses. With preparations starting on Monday, the sales began on Wednesday the 11th in the ‘Hang Out’ area on the first floor.

All in all, it was an ingenious idea from the Student Council to raise money. The students certainly enjoyed it and were much impressed by their hard work. In conclusion, it is probably a unanimous agreement on the students’ part that our brand new Student Council has done a slap-up job with their first official fundraiser, and that we hope for more events like this in the near future.
