Student Council Election
I had just transferred over from Taylor’s Subang campus and was most bemused to see posters (A4 sized papers, really) plastered all over the place screaming out for the masses to vote KJ for president. Voting, I was told, would be held on Orientation Night that very Thursday. A mere four days away.
Where then, were the campaigning products of other nominees? This omnipresent KJ was already making waves with his campaigning. It seems that he had ticked some seniors off by tucking posters into the crannies above doors so that they rained down on people when the door opened.
The next day, posters for other nominees started mushrooming up everywhere. Faiz and Lucas came up with a video on YouTube. And even certain lecturers had Sharon Ng’s face hanging from ID tags. By the third day, everyone was going full steam ahead with their campaigning. ‘Vote 4 George’ badges were proudly scotch taped onto people’s jackets. And I doubt anyone missed the large standing banners proclaiming Stephanie Balling and Jun Kit for president and vice president respectively. Their initials ‘JK’ and ‘S’ were arranged in such a manner that brings to mind the former president of the United States, John F. Kennedy (JFK), with the ‘S’ stamped in between and slightly below the ‘J’ and ‘K’.
On Thursday, most of the students came all dolled up in lieu of the orientation party that would be held in conjunction with the by-elections. Even before voting, some (like me) could already guess the outcome of the elections. George Robinson, for one, seemed to have charmed the pants off almost everyone. As did Abby Ho who was running for treasurer. The answer to who may be our next president was still murky. All anyone could do was sit tight and wait for the announcement of 2009’s student council.
As the night began to draw to an end, Mr. Rahul announced the winners to a fidgety crowd. Sharon Ng and Abby Ho are to be secretary and treasurer respectively. George Robinson and Kah Jun will share the vice president’s title. And Stephanie Balling has been deemed fit by the general public to be our college’s president.
The new student council looks like a bright and affable lot. I believe I share in everyone’s hope and expectations that they will hear the voices of everyone and plan an exciting calendar for everyone in the year 2009.
