TCSHMUN Internal Conference
Last Saturday, Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas was invaded with suits and ties, and I’m not talking about lecturers working overtime. The Model UN Internal Conference opened on 21st August 2010 at 8 am, and delegates and chairs showed up in formal clothes, creating an air of professionalism.
What is the Model UN about? The Model UN is an organization that is well known throughout most schools and colleges in the world, with Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas boasting it’s very own branch. The Model UN, or MUN for short, hosts various events such as internal and external conferences. Here delegates meet up and debate with each other over real world issues, just like a real United Nations set up.
At this Internal Conference topics such as Change in Climate and the Rights of Minorities (religious and ethnical issues) were discussed by delegates. Students from Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas and Taylor’s College Subang Jaya campuses attended with external chair members from Mont Kiara International School attending as well. Starting at 8 am, there was an hour long introduction of the main administrators and the workings of the Model UN to all the new intake students. At 9 am the action started with opening speeches by all the delegates. They stated their assigned countries’ stance on the given issues and from then onwards “lobbying” time occurred. The delegates were assigned to groups representing each of the issues and they wrote resolutions from their country’s point of view.
By 12 30 pm the resolutions had been passed for approval and a break was given to all. From 1 30 pm to 3 30 pm delegates discussed and debated resolutions on the minorities issue and from 3 30 pm to 5 30 pm, climate change was debated. These debates and discussions over resolutions are called open debates. Resolutions ranged from the serious and thoughtful, like carbon trading, to the silly and humorous, such as a resolution to move the entire world population to another planet! Delegates made amendments to the resolutions and voted on the passage of them. The open debating can often get very heated and serious but delegates made allowances for fun and overall the Internal Conference proved a very good practice for the new intake students.
The success of the day was highlighted during the last thirty minutes when the awards were presented. Awards range from hottest delegate to awards for the most diplomatic. Notable winners include Vikrum Jit as the Best Speaker; Lim Kee En for cutest male delegate, Victor Tan won various awards such as most likely to be arrested and most passionate speaker, while the best couple was given to the chair and the co chair of the event. Such novelty awards gave the conference a fun and less serious element.
Overall around thirty to forty delegates participated in the conference and the issues discussed hold important relevance to the current events of our world. The Internal Conference is the first taste of what’s to come for the new intake of students. Future events of the Model UN include a main external conference from the 4th to the 6th of September.
