SAM's College Life in One Day (CLIOD)

On Monday, 7th June 2010, TCSH held College Life In One Day (CLIOD) for Form Five students who wished to experience a day of college life, particularly if they wanted to know what it’s like to be a South Australian Matriculation (SAM) student for one day.

This event is not only held to give the students an insight into college life and prepare them for their own, it is also intended to give the students the opportunity to meet the lecturers who might also be teaching them next year.

Registration for the event began at 8:00 a.m to 9:00 a.m. After that, the students were assembled in the Alpha Theatre for the opening speeches and they were then introduced to the South Australian Matriculation Programme. The brief introduction was then followed by an ice-breaking session to allow the students came from different schools to mingle around and get to know one another better.

The activity for the ice-breaking session was the lie game, where the students had to tell four things about themselves: three of which were truths and one which was a lie. Then, other students had to guess which one of those four facts was the lie. The group which guessed the most number of correct lies won the game. This game did not take much time due to the small number of students involved. Nevertheless, the students seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Next, Miss Geetha gave a briefing on the Research Project to the students. She asked them about what drove them to learn and explained that the drive to learn should not only come from passion, interest and need, but also from the fun of learning and the eagerness to take on the challenge of learning. After that, the students were divided into three groups: Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3. Both Group 1 and Group 2 consisted of Science students while Group 3 was made up of Humanities students.

Few activities were lined up for each group, including, The Food Factor, Rainbow Above The Sky and Behind Enemy Lines. The students in Group 1 and 2 participated in The Food Factor. These students were further divided into four groups and each group was given 5 unknown food samples labelled A, B, C, D & E. They were then given 30 minutes to conduct different food tests to identify the samples given (which, unbeknownst to them prior to the food test, were starch, glucose, sucrose, 0.1% ascorbic acid and 1.0% ascorbic acid). This activity not only challenged their memory to recall food tests studied in Form Four Biology as they also learnt to work well in a group to ensure that that the samples could be identified within the time given. The group that managed to identify all food samples correctly within 30 minutes were then given a small reward.

The next activity, Rainbow Above The Sky, was also participated by the Science students. This activity revolved around the theory of the line emission spectrum of an element, where different elements would emit different colours when energy (this case, in the form of heat) was supplied. The students carried out an experiment which was called the Flame Test, an experiment to determine different types of metals based on the flame colour, as different metal ions produce flames of different colour. This activity gave the students a chance to recall the properties of different elements that they learnt in Form Four and also gave them an idea of how firecrackers and fireworks are made using different types of metals.

Behind Enemy Lines, on the other hand, was participated by both the Science and Humanities students. This activity was intended to introduce one of the applications of mathematics to be covered under the Mathematics subject, specifically the application of Matrices. The students were taught how to encode and decode secret messages. Besides that, they also had the chance to solve simple matrices using graphical calculators. Nearing the end of this activity, participants were given several encoded messages for them to decode and among the coded messages were “"STAND ON ONE FOOT WHILE SINGING MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB" and "SPIN ROUND THREE TIMES AND MAKE THE SOUND OF AN ANGRY DUCK". The fastest team/individual to decode the messages was awarded a gift.

There were also other activities held for the students, such as Living On Your Own and Economics For Everyone. After all these activities, the students then assembled once again in the Alpha Theatre for “Reflections,” which was once again conducted by Miss Geetha. The students were then served their lunch and then they prepared for an Explorace with the Student Council of TCSH. At around 2:30 p.m, the students gathered in the Alpha Theatre for the last time for the prize-giving and closing ceremony.

All in all, the students who came for TCSH'S College Life In One Day definitely had an insight of what college life is all about. Not only did they have fun and got to make new friends, they also benefited academically considering that the activities were mainly intended to help them with their SPM exams that they will face at the end of this year. After this fruitful experience, hopefully the faces that will fill the SAM classes in our campus next year will be the same faces that I saw during the CLIOD activity this year. Who knows?
