Taylor's Got Talent 2010
The Hang Out area truly lived up to its name when the clock ticked 5pm on the 30th of April as Taylor’s Got Talent, an event organized by the Student Council, kicked off with two colour-coordinated emcees entertaining the crowd with their humourous welcoming speeches. Leong Jian Wei and Rachel Wong, both clad in pink and black, introduced the evening’s first performers.
Originally from Sri Garden, previous year’s winner, Musicology took to the stage with their acoustic renditions of the latest chart-toppers, one of them being “Down” by Jay Sean. Still a hit with the crowd, they were welcomed with loud applause and cheers.
Mr. Rahul, Ms. Hedwig, Ms Li Sze and Ms. Miza soon arrived and were our esteemed judges; they were our Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi. As the photographers snapped away with their high-tech DSLR cameras, TCSH’s packed ground floor cheered excitedly as the first act performed a smooth Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. The duo received good feedback from the crowd and left the stage all-smiles. Next up was a four-pieced band that impressed us all with another mainstream approach. The singer of the band displayed good vocal range and everyone definitely took notice.
”If you’re hungry, head over to Ervin’s Restaurant!” was what our friendly hosts kept announcing to keep a balance between food and music – the passion of our generation today! Soon after, three pretty girls who could pass off as the Asian version of ‘Destiny’s Child’ stood out with their self-choreographed routine. Yes, you guessed it right ladies, all that dancing in high heels hurt! Even dancer Ying said so herself “Ohemgee, I can’t feel my toes and my heel got stuck in the carpet while I was dancing!”
After this came Danisha and the crowd went crazy with applause and cheered as she stepped up to the stage wearing a purple dress. Clearly, she was the crowd’s favourite and so was her song choice which was “Use Somebody” by American rock band Kings of Leon. The crowd stayed silent as she sang the chorus “Someone like you, somebody…”
People then got hungry and started filling their tummies with pizza and snacks while performances by SKY, the Korean Club and Chase took place. “He’s awesome, I like his spirit!” was what HS5’s Wilbur Chin exclaimed about Chase’s singing. The five lovely ladies from the Korean Club consisting of Yoon Jung, Cha Hi, Na Ree, Soo Bin, Chae Young and their 4-inch heels got jaws dropping. They came up with an outstanding dance number to the song by Korean Pop Band, 4 Minutes. Some students couldn’t help but groove to the beat which echoed across campus. The girls gave their best pose at the end of the song which got the excited crowd to their feet, after which a panting Yoon Jung came running off the stage yelling, “My heels almost broke!”
Singing numbers by Kar Reid, HS5+4’s Ying Tan, Aaron Lee, Azri, Kenneth, Imran & The Penguin got the audience into an American Idol feel with every note they hit. A 5-piece band with their version of ‘Boston’, on the other hand, was said to be a little loud, thus proving that our college has a good sound system!
A Bollywood dance number then shifted things up a notch as solo dancer, Monique wowed the crowd for a whole 5 minutes. Also, violinist, Koh Youlin effortlessly performed a captivating number and earned a spot as the Top 5 Finalists.
After all 16 performances, Student Council President, Jian Wei said “So awesome, no?!” The judges then got down to business and started deliberating, deciding and short-listing the contestants into the top five. With an approximate 15-20 minutes taken to ascertain the finalists, all the contestants were waiting patiently yet anxiously for the results. After what seemed like forever, The Korean Club, Alicia, Monique Selvam, The Penguins along with Youlin were announced as the finalists of the night. Needless to say, cheering and applause filled the air and posters made by their fans and/or friends were waved high up to show their joy. Sadly, like every other competition, some win and some lose for these five performances had to be once again narrowed down to the final two. The Korean Club and The Penguins took the top two spots.
Taylor’s Got Talent approached its finale as the students cast their votes. The students played a significant role by voting for the winner of the fun-filled evening. The Beta Theatre was under the watchful eyes of Student Council members as the voting procedure was conducted efficiently. The votes were counted and double-checked and everyone gathered once more around the stage while the hosts announced the winner of Taylor’s Got Talent 2010. A whole lot of confetti and bunches of hugs were showered when The Korean Club were announced the winner. Na Ree excitedly said “I cannot believe this!” as everyone snapped pictures of our new winners and congratulated them for their effort and hard work. And with that, another brilliant event by an extraordinary bunch of talented people concluded on an otherwise ordinary day in TCSH.
