DOT Club’s First Dissection

The Doctors of Tomorrow Club of Taylor's College Sri Hartamas, otherwise known as DOT Club, is a newly-established club led by the January 2010-intake of A Levels students. Even though it has only been four months since it was founded by President Azzim Emir Imran, it has been actively organizing events related to health and bioscience.

After their success in organizing Orchid Day in collaboration with the Leo Club, the DOT Club has once again organized an interesting activity, this time all on their own, with their very first dissection.

The dissection which took place in Biology Lab 5 on the 22nd of April received overwhelming support from both the Science and Humanities students. A total of fifty-six CAL and SAM students from both January and March intakes registered for the dissection. Before the students were allowed to dissect anything, the club’s two teacher advisors gave a brief explanation on the procedures involved in dissection. Miss Tan Ai Nee explained the procedures regarding the dissection of frogs while Miss Koh Yee Jin did the same for mice. After that, the dissection began.

Future doctors hard at work

The students who filled the Biology lab were all eager and excited to begin the dissection of either frogs or mice. They worked in pairs, so there were 23 groups altogether, and all the groups dissected 12 mice and 11 frogs in total. Both the mice and the frogs were still alive during the dissection, as they had only been chloroformed instead of being killed prior to the dissection. As the students slowly cut the frogs’ bodies open, most of them were in awe to see that the frog’s heart was still pumping. They took out organs from both the frogs and the mice carefully and analysed each one of them.

The DOT Club successfully proved that students of TCSH are more than capable of becoming the doctors of tomorrow. This club provides the avenue for students to gain experience and the information they will need if they want to become medical practitioners. This particular day will no doubt be a life-long memory for all the students who participated as the day where the journey towards becoming a doctor begins. These students did not just learn facts and details about the organs and systems of frogs and mice; they also acquired patience and skills which will become useful once they finally become real surgeons.
