TCSH CNY Celebration

On 25 February 2010, TCSH celebrated Chinese New Year, the key event being the arrival of Fly FM’s crew. Following the dress code, the hall was decked with crimson-attired students and more traditional ones opting for samfoo, cheongsam and Mandarin collar shirts. Red packets cut in swirling shapes hung from the ceiling.

A countdown ensued, after which the welcoming party, among which were Mr. Lim Tou Boon, President of Taylor’s College; Mr. Anandakumaresh, Principal; and Mr. Rahul, Head of Student Affairs, tossed the yee sang laid on a table in the foyer. According to Chinese tradition, tossing yee sang – a stringy dish of sliced vegetables, peanutsand plum sauce – brings good fortune. An orange and white cake iced with dancing lions was brought forward and cut by Mr. Lim.

The Fly FM crew then proceeded to perform the Lion dance. Two members enacted the feat of the red-and-silver lion, which was heralded by the thud of drumbeats, the clashing of cymbals and a gong. Nadia in a round mask of a bald person bowed and played lion-tamer. One of the lions proceeded to peel a mandarin orange proffered. The fruit was then taken away, while the crowd clapped. Competition for attention turned up in the form of a purple-and-gold lion that wagged its tail, blinked and lay on the floor like a puppy to the amusement of the audience.

Musical entertainment came in the sound of song: Yee Chun Hwa, which describes springtime. In Chinese culture, this season signifies a beginning, joy, and the growth of flowers. The song was accompanied by a drummer, guitarist and pianist. The Dance Club performed a number consisting of flips and turns. The ladies were dressed in black and red and fluttered their feathery pink hand-fans, to several tunes, one of which was Pachelbel’s Canon in D.

Hafiz and Basil from Fly FM started a humourous Q and A session. They decided to award a prize to the guy who could say “Whazzup!” the loudest. One girl was selected to announce the more embarrassing “I love you!” to the cat-calling audience. A mime lion dance was held, in which three pairs of partners held each other’s waists in the lion-dance manner. One of the students who called himself Snoopy (“Snoop Dog,” remarked a Fly FM member) played the role of lion-shepherd.

After their enchanting performance the crew was provided lunch by TCSH. The Ed Board then had the opportunity to interview them. The interview is as follows:
Ed Board: What is the most exciting thing you have done during CNY?
Hafiz: Dancing in the rain in boxer shorts.

Ed Board: What do you think of TCSH?
Hafiz: Reminds me of Limkokwing College.
Nadia: It’s just as nice as the Subang campus. It’s Internet-based here and it’s smaller so people here get to be closer.
We also asked her about her previous performances.
Nadia: We've performed at three offices and one house.
Ed Board: What is the most interesting thing about Chinese New Year?
Ben: The cultural elements. You can learn to be an animal.

Ed Board: Did you really eat the oranges?
Ben: We just peeled and ate one of them.
