ECA Drive Day - Jan 2012

ECA Drive. It is pretty much the same thing each time it is carried out in college, but the great thing
about this drive is that it never gets boring as there are always new faces in the crowd. On the 13th
of January 2012, Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas held its annual ECA Drive. As usual, the board of
directors of each club and society geared up to recruit new members.

The first thing students notice is the display of pictures, banners, and posters of the many clubs
and societies all around the college campus. The physical displays embellished with festoons
of decorations are not the only things that capture one’s attention – the members of the club
themselves, too, do their best to get new recruits by introducing the club through slideshows and
performances. In a scenario in which new recruitments are needed, many adopt a persuasive and
determined attitude to convey the club’s objectives and goals to interested students. For instance,
Taylor’s vibrant Dance Club danced their heart out in front of the crowd, displaying both passion and
skill. Dance moves such as back flips also impressed the crowd, ultimately attracting some to join the
club. The Music Club, too, had their own performances which captivated the attention of many new
students. If you love music, this is the club for you! An interesting tactic done by the Fashion Club
was dressing up as Korean school girls with attractive accessories and walking around the campus
promoting their club. Besides that, the Leo Club offered free sweets to those who came by their
booth, not forgetting their famous Leo bell which was rung to attract the crowd. Generally, all the
clubs had their individual qualities and methods that made the ECA Drive such a great success.

The main question of this event is, “Why should I sign up for any clubs or societies?” Well, firstly they
would like actively involve themselves in something meaningful other than their studies. Secondly,
since it is the beginning of the year, why not take a chance on something new or share a mutual
passion with a new group of people? It is always great to mix around with new acquaintances and
broaden your perspectives on various matters. It also gives you the opportunity to be passionate
towards a new cause or hobby. Thirdly, students want to graduate knowing that they have not
only done well for their exams, but have also participated in enriching activities as it is essential to
graduate with both academic qualifications and extra-curricular achievements. Lastly, one must
concede that one joins due to the influence of friends and the fear of being left out socially.

All in all, when it comes to Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas, the excitement never stops. The vibrant
atmosphere here contributes to a great year of academics and activities. The ECA Drive allows for
the exploration and discovery of one’s field of interest, passion, and even potential. Just by signing
up for a new club, one has taken a step forward in learning something new, hence expanding one’s
knowledge. That, itself, means that you have dared yourself to try something new. By walking
around and making enquiries, that itself, is exploration and discovery. By finding a club that may
work to your advantage or help deepen your passion, you are taking an opportunity to be part of
something great. Perhaps you may even get elected as President of one of the clubs – which of
course, will be a bonus not only to hone one’s leadership skills, but also for pride might I add.

To sum it all up, college life has its difficulties but the great side to it always makes it all worthwhile.
It is all about striking a balance in college life and through this process, you will learn something new
about yourself that you probably did not know about before. With that said, the ECA Drive definitely
provided room for one’s self discovery and honing of one’s potential.
