The French Masquerade Ball

The Rotaract Club hosted the French Masquerade Ball at TCSH on 24 September after realising that there’s a growing need to break down inter-cultural barriers. Psychologists believe that one of the major causes of racial prejudice is when one party doesn’t know enough about the other. So, in order to overcome our ignorance of a particular culture, it is best to begin by learning about it.

The French Masquerade

Since French Week was approaching, French culture it was. Not only did calling the party a masquerade add glamour to the event, it also played a role in uniting people. People recognised each other by their essence, not by their faces.

The ground floor of our campus was decorated like a classy French ballroom. Guests were dressed in their best, and the variety of masks was endless. The elevation between our ICT centre and Alpha Theatre was the focal point of the event, which kicked off with our very own fashion show! Our in-house models, Josephine, Vivien, Grace, Jennifer and Melissa, set the scene ablaze as they displayed the flamboyance of French costumes. This pageant truly showcased French traditional dressing.

The next performance was the French cancan dance by Victor, Kee En, Johnny, Cephas and Alan. This was one of the cutest acts I’ve ever seen. It got everyone on their feet, tapping and kicking for joy. This was followed by a group vocal performance of the song Seindah Biasa by Dato Siti Nurhaliza. It was performed by four gorgeous ladies: Nadiah, Meenakshi, Sherllyn and Yasmin. This song had everyone swaying to the melody of love. What an atmosphere it created. Beautiful.

Following that was a French song performed by Nidhi. The song, Je ne veux pas la fiin de nous, was familiar to most as it was the French version of Michael Jackson’s hit record, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You. Being a sweet, strongly melodic romantic number, this music got couples onto the dance floor. Then, was a performance by a band consisting of Joshua, Prithiv, Kim and Victor, with Kee En as the vocalist and Jessica as the violinist, to the song Only One by Yellowcard. That was some real good talent coming to life.

Then, there was the solo performance by Azri, to another mellow Malay song, Lagu Kita, originally sung by Aizat. Not only did he lend his dulcet voice, he played the guitar too. His excellent vocals and skilful guitar playing mesmerised the crowd. The final performance was by Maira who sang a Filipino song, Sanay Wala Nang Wakas, the title track of a very popular Filipino series. She sang with a powerful and emotion-filled voice.

There was also food provided at the ball in the form of a buffet offering a variety food. So, what was on the menu, you ask? Since it was a French ball, it was only fitting that they serve trays full of lip-smacking French fries, accompanied by a variety of delicious tarts, cakes and pastries. Bon appetit!

To sustain the mood of the evening, music continued to be played and the dance floor continued to burn. Conversations ensued. Friendships flourished. Love blossomed. Unity achieved. Mission accomplished.
