Student Council Elections 2014
January: the beginning of a new year and a new intake. The halls filled with unfamiliar faces; some nervous while others quickly mingling about to find students with similar interests. Although it was not immediately apparent, all these students had one thing in common –they were bound to face a range of complications that came with the disarray of college life; and would need help in the worst of times to overcome these obstacles. But not to worry, fellow students! This is where TCSH’s very own Student Council comes in. A Student Council is a representative structure for students, through which they are able to involve themselves in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management and staff for the benefit of the college and its students.
This year, the Student Council members were elected by interviews conducted by the ECA teacher advisor and senior council members. However, the president was chosen based on the number of votes cast in the final election. In early February, nominees were shortlisted and expected to battle for the position of president; a position that came with great responsibility and honour. Lee Burcea Maria Sarah, Joey Wong, Chai Siew Hong and Chan Thim Yung were the chosen nominees. Then began the friendly competition. Ultimately, it was a popularity contest; the four competitors had to mingle and get to know the students as well as show everyone what they were capable of by organising different events. The four candidates’ methods of campaigning were very different and brought success in different ways. Their campaigns were usually centred around socialising with the other students on different occasions like Valentine’s Day, or through competitions, lucky draws and the distribution of free food. The question and answer (Q&A) session a day before the elections began also proved to be a wonderful medium to apprehend the candidates’ opinions on the problems students face. It was really interesting to see the way the candidates thought on the spot to answer the audience's questions as cleverly and generously as possible.
During the entire rally, all competitors were friendly, spirited and extremely supportive of each other, proving their worth as candidates through their sportsmanship. Regardless of who won the rally, they all worked hard and in that process became friends and made many other friends along the way. When the results of the election were finally released, Joey Wong was announced as President of the Student Council 2014! All the other candidates graciously congratulated Joey and within their own circles, celebrated what they had achieved throughout the entire experience. Here are what the candidates had to say about the rally:
It was a journey that, although tiresome, gave invaluable experience to all the candidates who partook in it, allowing them to vanquish the hardships along the way. Despite the fact that only one President can prove victorious of the end of the day, the candidates all agreed that the journey they took together was the most significant part of the race for them, not the results. How right they are indeed. In life, we should appreciate the little moments, whether or not we succeed; for in the end having those memories to reminisce on are always achievements on their own. Kudos to the brave candidates for a good race! Finally, a hearty congratulations to Joey and the other candidates for striving their hardest and pushing their limits to provide fierce competition!

“The rally was a once in a life time experience and I’m so glad I took part in it. My competitors were incredibly tough but I thank and I love them for that.” – Lee Burcea Maria Sarah.
“The lesson that I've learnt is to never give up, even if failure comes first, victory follows behind.” – Chan Thim Yung.
“I really can't pick a single name! All of the candidates were very spontaneous and critical in terms of answering questions and that is such wonderful trait in a leader. We all had our strengths and weaknesses and from there, we learn.” – Joey Wong, when asked about the toughest competitor.
