Monash Business Challenge (Interview)

Interview with the winners of 2013 Monash University School of Business Investment Challenge.

On the 20th of July 2013, four of our students, Yue Sue San, Tai Chia Ye, Tay Zhi Chong and Fun Ming Ye represented Taylor's College Sri Hartamas in the 2013 Monash University School of Business Investment Challenge.

So what's the competition about? It's main purpose is to inculcate greater awareness of accounting and finance discipline in students by providing a hands-on approach to participating in a setting without monetary risk and by provoking intense competition among students in a safe environment.

This exclusive event offers two 50% scholarships for the best two students in the competition to pursue any course at the School of Business at Monash University. There were in total 15 teams invited from local and international schools, and after a hard day of work, our students emerged as winners.

And here's an exclusive interview with them:

1. What was the competition about?
It's like the stock market, and we decide when to buy and sell shares. It's basically an investment challenge where we trade stocks in a simulators training platform and we learn how to use virtual money to invest. The winner would be the team with the highest return or profit from their investments.

2. What was the experience like for you guys?
It was actually quite fun. It was a really good learning opportunity and experience for us because we got to learn more terminology and mechanisms about how to stock market works. It also offered us an insight on how to be a good trader.

3. What was the most challenging part of the competition?
The time constraint, I guess. We had to be quick to decide whether to sell or buy our shares. 300 seconds, to be exact!

4. Favorite moment during the competition?
The time when I lost a lot of money. So ironic, right? But it's true. When you trade and get a return, you won't know the return until the end of the round. So basically, I had a cash balance of negative one million, and only until the end of the round, when everything totals up, then only the negative turns to positive one million. These are the things I like, where things does not turn out to be the way you see it. So, you should be able to take risks to win a competition.

5. How do you guys feel about winning?
We didn't really expected it. So, we're quite happy.

6. Are you grateful to anyone?
Our teachers, Mr. Lim TH and Ms. Sujata

7. Would you ever enter again?
Yeah sure, because of the prize. We won RM2,500.
