Style
Style is defined as a manner of how things are done. Like how Kimora does things fabulously. Style is also defined as a way of expressing something (like music, language, art, etc) that is characteristic of a particular person or group of people or period.
Another definition of style is that style refers to the popular taste at a given time. Think of how the hippies are always associated with the 1960s era. Or how bell-bottomed jeans are so 70s, thanks to Saturday Night Fever.
Based on all these definitions by the-always-helpful Google, style can be loosely defined as something that distinguishes you from others. There are many styles in a person’s life, like your speaking style refers to the way you talk, your working style is how you get your work done, and then there’s the style in every girl’s head when we say the word “Style”: Fashion.
I can’t exactly pinpoint on what exactly my style is, but I know I’ve got it, though finding it wasn’t easy. I’ve had my fair share of those days where the only colour in my closest was black. I get it, finding your own style is tricky, so here’s a few tips from a sister to another…
Most of all, like the saying goes, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it”. And don’t worry; your style won’t go out of trend because like Yves Saint Laurent said, “Style is forever”… It doesn’t come and go, unlike trends. Your personal style is for you to possess and for none to emulate.

- Get fashion magazines. Browse through it. Find something you like, and tear the page out. Paste it somewhere, like your own look-book or something.
- Try to copy the look you’ve selected. And then add your own twist to it, like accessories! If you love happy colours, wear 7 different colours on you. If you’re into the wild, feathered earrings and owl necklaces are not hard to get… Try to portray what you are as a person through your clothing.
- Remember! Comfort is essential. If you know the heels are gonna kill you after 10 minutes in it, just forget it.
- Don’t be scared to mix and match. If Dr. Marten boots and a cocktail dress is your style, by all means, go ahead. Get creative!
- Don’t go for the mainstream stuff. You wouldn’t want to show up somewhere and find someone else in the exact same pink top. Try flea markets and bazaars, they’re great for unique pieces and not to mention, your wallet will be ever so grateful…
- Don’t follow trends. Just because everyone is wearing a puffy shouldered top, doesn’t mean you need to run to the nearest Cotton On and get yourself the top too, unless of course, its your style…
- And lastly, have fun! Keep experimenting till you’ve got it!
