LEO Club Installation Day
At 3.30pm on August 13, the Leo Club at Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas officially began their Installation Day at the Alpha Theatre. This was the day the Leo Club officially announced their new Board of Directors who would be heading the club for the year 2010/2011, as well as presented certificates to all Leo members, or Lions as they call themselves. In keeping with the occasion, all members were dressed in formal attire.
Starting off the ceremony were welcoming speeches by the day’s guests of honour, most notably the President of the Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur Sentul, Mr. Eric Lai, who gave a brief account of the history of the Lions Club in Malaysia, which is the parent organization of the Leo Club. In his speech, he stressed how important it is for the Leo members to continue with their efforts to serve society and to take pride in this effort. He also advised them to always keep in touch with each other even after college.
Then, one by one every Leo Club member present was called up on stage to receive their respective official Lions badge and certificate, followed by the reciting of the Leo club pledge by all Lions. Once everyone resumed their seats, the new president, the two vice presidents, the secretary, treasurer and other Board of Directors members were announced and each of them too gave their respective pledges. Upon their acceptance as the new Board of Directors, the Lions, living up to their reputation as one of the most majestic animals in the wild, congratulated them with their signature fists in the air followed by three load roars!
Those who were present that day were then treated to a little light entertainment in the form of a video presentation of past Leo Club activities, which included the Zoo Volunteering Project which was one of the club’s biggest and most successful activities, Orchid Day, visits to the old folk’s homes and orphanage houses, as well as last year’s Installation Day. There were certainly some smiles and laughter as members saw pictures of themselves carrying out these activities, and what a privilege it must have been for them to be officially recognized for their hard work during this ceremony.
As the event was drawing to a close, the new club president Lee Ki Yip was called to the podium to give his acceptance speech. In his speech, he shared his hopes and plans for the club, and gave a touching account on how much he had dreamed of the opportunity to head a club which he has been a member of since secondary school. With his years of experience as a Lion, Ki Yip is certainly the right man for the job, and we wish him the best of luck in his new position.
In accordance to Leo Club tradition, with a firm hand the club president struck the bell on the podium to officially adjourn the meeting at 4.30pm. Immediately after, everyone was treated to some light refreshments outside the theatre. This was followed by a photography session for the new Board of Directors and all club members. The Installation Day marked the beginning of a new Leo Club and a step forward to achieving their mission of encouraging and inspiring young men and women to serve others in their community and around the world.
