City Survival Skills (For Males)

How many times have you heard the line “The world is a dangerous place”? Most of us associate the aforementioned line with women, children and so forth. This talk titled “City Survival Skills (For Males)” was launched to put that misconception to rest as boys and men alike too are potential victims of the myriad dangers that the urban jungle hosts.

This talk was held on the 16th of July for the males of CAL June intake at the Alpha Theatre in order to equip them with the necessary skills to survive in the city.

The talk was presented by an upbeat volunteer rescuer by the name of Michael, who immediately filled the hall with echoes of laughter with his easy-going demeanour. Firstly, Michael began with a brief description of his occupation and what it entails. His effervescent behaviour and numerous anecdotes which he shared with us made the speech more interactive, thus enlivening the hall and capturing the attention of the (unfortunately small) crowd. Nevertheless, the audience’s unwavering attention made up for this. What made this talk so useful was Michael’s ability to make all the information pertinent to teenagers.

The highlights of his talk were how to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich manoeuvre as well as how to stop bleeding. Michael explicated the specifics of CPR, stressing on vital points and the sheer importance of this immediate treatment in saving a person’s life. He intertwined this information with a personal experience that taught us all a valuable lesson. He also explained the Heimlich manoeuvre, even inviting a few willing participants to give it a go. Once again, he shared with us a personal anecdote, keeping everyone rooted to their seats.

What truly made this talk a stand-out was how practical it was. Despite the light hearted atmosphere, Michael spared no details, ensuring that we all understood the key points that he delivered, making them hit very close to home indeed. All in all, it was a truly memorable experience for me and I am quite certain the CAL June Intake students that were in the hall with me would say the same. Michael ended the speech by telling us the sheer bliss he experiences from being a volunteer rescuer – “You can’t put price on saving a life.”
