The Arrival of the Bank Negara and Petronas Scholars 2009
On 4th July the sponsored students arrived at Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas to register, accompanied by their parents. Grace Wong from Butterworth, Penang, said that this was her first time in Kuala Lumpur. Sponsored by the Petronas Education Programme, she was sent to do her International Baccalaureate (IB).
The CAL students were given a briefing in the Gamma Theatre whereas the IB students listened to theirs in the Alpha Theatre. Among the speakers was the Director in Business Development for Bumiputeras. He joked, “The amount of luggage you bring is equivalent to staying for 20 years,” and proceeded to relate an anecdote of his visit to Kolej Mara, Banting. “Why don’t I get any Petronas scholars?” complained the principal of Kolej Mara. “They’re at Taylor’s,” was the witty reply.
The sponsored scholars are among the unique ones who were offered overseas scholarships, numbering under 500. Warm embraces commenced between the parents and the students.
Mr Thou extended a warm welcome to the students, highlighting the skills inculcated by Taylor’s in its students, namely discipline, cognitive skills, communication, interpersonal, intrapersonal, cosmopolitan thinking and technologically savvy attributes to name a few. To the CAL students he emphasized the common phenomenon of multi-tasking. The programmes at Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas are designed to accommodate this. The college is comfortable “so that you can stay as long as you like.” Hence the bean bags .
The IB students will take 6 subjects, in addition to 150 hours of community work as well as participate in extra-curricular activities. All the students take French but not Malay as a second language. Furthermore, universities encourage IB students to study theatre arts. As they say, life is a stage. In the case of the strenuous IB programme, one might ask, “To be or not to be?” Another aspect unique to the IB is that its candidates are required to conduct their original research and write a paper on it.
At 1 pm, the students and their families went to the hostel to commence unpacking, and prepare for the start of their programme on Monday.
