The Avengers (Film Review)
BOOM!
POW! HULK SMASH! *GUNS FIRING* 5 men in colourful uniforms and Scarlett Johansson
in a tight suit is really all you need to get a 5 star rated movie by director
Joss Whedon. In order to avoid any spoilers and
anguish in this review, the plot is simple, Samuel L Jackson reprises his role
as Nick Fury who gathers up the unique individuals to help save the Earth from
mad crazy Loki.
The cast is simply booming with big
names such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth,
Scarlett Johansson and newcomer Jeremy Renner. Just listing these names makes
me wonder at the amount of expenditure they must have spent on their salary. Luckily,
the movie was a big hit. Unless you have watched Mission Impossible 4 and
noticed the new Bourne Legacy, one would not actually call Jeremy Renner a
newcomer. In fact, he is AWESOME! And plays Hawk Eye quite well, the most
memorable part he had was when he shot his arrow while looking at the other
direction. The critic’s favourite however, was Mark Ruffalo’s performance as
the incredible Hulk.
Do not be surprised, but the actor who
raked in the second highest praises from critics was Tom Hiddleston as Loki. If
you are in disbelief right now, do try to think carefully before disagreeing
with them. Didn’t you recoil in absolute hate and disgust when Loki appeared?
Didn’t you ever wonder, what the heck was wrong with Loki’s mentality? And that,
ladies and gentlemen, what was Hiddleston intending to achieve while playing
this dark character.
I applaud Avengers for being able to be
intense and fast paced at the same time, however, there was no shortage in
comedic relief and a bog portion of that responsibility was given mostly to
Iron Man. Good move Whedon, really good move. However a word of advice for the
director, replacing Galaga with tetris battle would have earned more laughs.
Stark is able to maintain that aura of insouciant carefree attitude while
saving the world and this really ‘annoys’ Captain America who has dealt with
the bleak reality of war and wants the mission to stay as serious as possible.
Another tricky bit this movie overcame
wonderfully is the equally gargantuan egos that came with the cast, putting the
volatile Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America together, you could almost
imagine how things would have happened if they had not been able to get along.
They would have surely destroyed the
world but, Whedon was able to capture all that “ego chaos” and turned it into
“teamwork”. Not only that, but everyone has an important part to play in the
movie. Although, my last complaint is, Thor has a Hammer, Captain America has a
shield, Iron Man has a suit, Hawk Eye has super arrows and bows, but the black
Widow only gets a TINY GUN? Because of that, she had to take a gun from the bad
guys.
