Valentine's At TCSH

You can call it your special day with that special someone or you can call it “Single’s Awareness” day. Whatever you call it, it’s Valentine’s Day. Mythological origins of Valentine’s Day date it back to a Christian saint, St. Valentino, but the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today owes its origins to a few chocolate companies who during the 1920s wanted to create a profit.

Despite its dubious origins, we all consider it the day of love. Even before Valentine’s Day arrived, posters from the Entrepreneur’s Club and the Psychology Club were put up to remind us all that this is the day to truly express our love.

At Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas, the halls and rooms were buzzing with excitement over what was going to happen on the day. Friends shouted greetings of “Happy Valentine’s Day” and joked over who was who’s valentine. Lonely hearts were on the lookout for that special someone. Lecturers would greet the class and ask us with big smiles what we were planning for our Valentine’s Day. Love-struck or lonely, students even wore heart shaped patterned clothing or necklaces to commemorate the day. Whether you loved it or hated it, college seemed a lot brighter and warmer (a great relief to us all).

There were sales of numerous items by the Entrepreneur’s Club TCSH and the Psychology Club TCSH. Situated on the first floor in front of the escalators were tables filled with items such as vibrant flowers (none other than roses of different hues), mini chocolate cupcakes (cute and delicious!), red heart shaped balloons and an assortment of papers. These papers were used to write touching dedications and declarations of love to close friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, and even those who were shy were able to make anonymous dedications! Flowers were priced at RM4 a stalk and at a bargain of 3 stalks for RM10 for the person with a big heart or the person who has trouble making up his/her mind.

But the fun did not stop at the sales. Placed at various bathrooms throughout Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas, were lonely heart advertisements. They were cleverly designed with a headshot of the person and a cartoon body with a tag line such as, “Will you be my valentine?” The boys of Taylor’s, all dressed up in their best, held up signs asking girls to be theirs on this special day. These were humorous as well as touching ways of bringing us all together, as friends or as couples.

This writer will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with someone special and feels that Valentine’s Day is a wonderful day for all, even for those without close friends or a special someone. It can be celebrated with a relative, a pet or even a stranger. But most of all it is a celebration of how much you can love yourself so treat yourself to a nice cupcake or present because the only way to love another is if you can love yourself. Happy Valentine’s Day to all Taylorians!
