National Cancer Week Sales at TCSH

Did you know that 7.9 million people died from cancer last year? Well most of us certainly didn’t but after the national cancer week campaign at Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas, the colours of the cause and the facts of the killer disease were well drilled into many.

Organized by the IB department, National Cancer Week was promoted in bright yellow flyers filled with facts on cancer, sales of merchandise and talks on the disease and awareness of cancer.

The bright yellow booth set up at the front of the first floor escalator was hard to miss and the goodies being sold were all provided by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. The society helps cancer victims deal with the disease and provides support through survivor talks and donations. The wide range of goods sold included yellow Relay for Life T-shirts at RM 10, symbolic yellow ribbon badges for RM 10 and even dog tag necklaces with uplifting inscriptions at RM 10. If a T-shirt or a necklace wasn’t your thing, then smaller items such as black and white wristbands were sold at RM 5 and even greeting cards for RM 2 a piece and a pack for RM 10.

However, for those who didn’t have notes to spare for merchandise, there were also donation boxes where small change could be dropped when passing by the booth, for every cent counts in the fight against cancer. The amount collected from the booth all goes to th e National Cancer Society which will use it for charity and for future cancer victims in Malaysia. But the main focus of this charity event, apart from fund raising, is to promote the plight of cancer victims in Malaysia and to educate the youth of today about the disease and the aims of the National Cancer Society.

The overall amount raised as of the 30th of September was RM 600 and this was the result of the hard work by the following IB organizers, Mihir Khubchandani, Lakshmi Sekhar and Mallini Kannan, who worked hand in hand with the National Cancer Society to bring this special week to TCSH. The National Cancer Society is a non-profit, non-government organization which aims to help all who are diagnosed with cancer of any type and all the students who purchased the merchandise can smile at the fact that their money will be actively used to save someone’s life, be it in the form of treatment or other kinds of support.

To end the week, all students of TCSH were encouraged to wear yellow (the worldwide colour for cancer charities) on Friday and to attend a talk given by MAKNA on general cancer and how to do a self breast examination; a must for anybody for it is one of the biggest killers when it comes to cancer. The time and energy put in by the IB department and the National Cancer Society during the week will definitely pay off due to the funds obtained and the general awareness about cancer that has been shared among the students of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas.
